Day two of the annual Australian Running Festival finished on a high note with more than 3,300 people taking part in the Half, Full and Ultra Marathons.
Merryland’s Anthony Farrugia was first to cross the line in The Canberra Times Canberra Marathon in a time of 2:28:23, edging out Matthew Fenech in a time of 2:28:44. The first woman across the line for the marathon was Magda Karimali-Poulos from Caringbah in a time of 2:47:45. Winner of the 50km Ultra Marathon was Sam Walker from Mosman in a time of 3:06:52.
Overall, a record 5,000+ entries were received for the weekend’s event, with perfect conditions for both Saturday’s 5km and 10km fun runs and today’s Marathon, Half Marathon and Ultra Marathon events. More than 60 per cent of entrants travelled from outside Canberra to take part in the festival, which saw a twenty-five per cent increase in entrants and an amazing $139,250 raised for more than 170 charities.
Race Director Fred Taylor said: “The festival was a great success this year, with the Canberra Times Canberra Marathon and the Half Marathon both reaching capacity, which is fantastic.”
“We look forward to a bigger event in 2013, in line with the Centenary of Canberra celebrations, and recognise the ongoing support of the sponsors, government organisations, emergency services and media partners who all work to make the Australian Running Festival the success it is.”
