Training is an essential part of your preparation for this years Australian Running Festival. Barry Keem, who won the 50km Australian Running Festival Ultra Marathon in 2016 and 2017 and runner up in 2018 has prepared some training plans for each event. Barry's tips will help you get ready to Conquer Canberra this April.
Barry started running when he was 8, and quickly developed a love for running and racing. He's been fortunate enough to travel the world to compete in many different races.
Barry has been competing in the Australian Running Festival for many years now, having won the 10km a couple of times, the Marathon in 2006, and the Ultra in 2016 and 2017. In 2019, Barry will be returning to the Australian Running Festival to claim the Ultra Marathon title again, aiming to win the event for the 3rd time. Winning the Ultra in 2016 was extra special, as Barry bested Olympian Marty Dent, which was a first in Barry's career.
Barry's normal training week involves a lot of running. When in full training, he will run twice a day everyday, up to 200km per week. He also runs a Running coaching business "Team Keem Coaching".
His advice to anyone planning to run this year’s Australian Running Festival is to "train hard and smart. There are no shortcuts unfortunately, so being committed and following a good program is key. Train hard…. Win easy!"
